Teachers ill-prepared for rushed new curriculum

According to an educationist, teachers are ill-prepared for the new academic year starting in September due to the rushed new curriculum training.

A quality education specialist at the SOS Villages Ghana revealed that the new curriculum for basic and high schools is being rushed and this can negatively impact teaching and learning.

As Ghana moves to roll out the standardized practical based approach curriculum. the Ghana Education Service has organized training for teachers in public schools.

However, Mr. Joseph Cudjoe Yani is worried that teachers are not well prepared even after the training to deliver on the job come September 2019.

He expressed his observation at a Youth Day Celebration Event organized by the No Business As Usual Project in the Asokore Mampong Municipality. The program was under the theme “Transforming Education; The Role Of Soft Skills In Professional Development.”

“I don’t think we are prepared enough to do it because we are rushing it. Can you imagine they are using just one week to train teachers from Kindergarten to Primary six in order to implement the new system?” he told Ultimate FM’s Ivan Heathcote – Fumador.

He is not convinced that teachers have been fully prepared and the good intentions for which the new curriculum was rolled out may be hampered.

“The consequences are that we might not be able to achieve what we have set out for because if the target is that there should be quality education, we might not end up achieving that,” Mr Yani cautioned.
