UG Nursing School praises AfDB and SIF for supporting its project

The School of Nursing and Midwifery of the University of Ghana has expressed appreciation to the Social Investment Fund (SIF) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) for for helping in the expansion of its facilities. Professor Alfred Edwin Yawson, who is the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, said the support came at the right time.

Professor Alfred Edwin Yawson also talked about the long-term lack of infrastructure at the school. During the time he was speaking at a site handover ceremony for the construction of a two-storey facility in Accra, Prof. Alfred Edwin Yawson said he hoped that the project would help in training and research and also improve responses to current and growing health challenges

The project, planned to be completed within 18 months and has been awarded to Messrs Marley Rossi, will come with a 150-seat lecture hall, offices, seminar rooms, video conferencing, an e-library, laboratories and washrooms.

Professor Alfred Edwin Yawson stated that “Above all, the project is about preparing our students for the future and ensuring our research efforts translate into practical, meaningful solutions for society.”

The facility forms a component of the Post-COVID-19 Skills Development and Productivity Enhancement Project (PSDPEP). This is also a five-year initiative (2022–2027) which was implemented by the Government of Ghana with financial support from the African Development Bank.

PSDPEP which was Launched in June 2022, is supported by a US$28.5 million grant. The main goal is to contribute to the  sustainable post-COVID-19 recovery of the country, especially in the health sector, while helping people to rebuild their livelihoods, incomes and employment opportunities, as well as private sector development.

The project seeks to specifically promote any health-related and technical entrepreneurial skills development in higher education to strengthen healthcare delivery and support the creation of jobs among the youth and women.

This kind of initiative is based on three main components: skills development in higher education to strengthen the health sector; rebuilding youth and women’s livelihoods through entrepreneurship and employment creation; and project management. Prof.  Alfred Edwin Yawson reiterated the dedication of the University by partnering with stakeholders to accelerate the development of the School.
