Use technology to deliver the new JHS CCP curriculum training – MoE, GES advised

Since the introduction of the new JHS CCP curriculum training , efforts by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to roll out teacher training programmes have failed.

One of the reasons being the Covid-19 and the decision to avoid unnecessary and risky social gatherings.

In a social media post by Hon Jerry Akporhor, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Founder at Informed Teachers Network, he called for the Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to deploy technology for the training on teachers.

He writes:

If you said COVID-19 is one of the major hindrances to the JHS new CCP curriculum training, can we leverage technology?
What about you letting the master trainers record comprehensive training videos, put them on storage devices like pen drives, attach copies of the curriculums, distribute them to all schools while District Training Officers are equipped to be on standby to provide further clarifications to teachers if the need be?
Won’t we achieve the same results?

I understand we are not in normal times. Can we do something abnormal? Or I’m overthinking?

Shouldn’t getting the job done and done well be our ultimate goal?
We have the training to offer teachers; we have an excuse, which is the ban on large gatherings. Shouldn’t that be the opportunity to explore other options which appear to be relatively cheaper, less stress and equally effective?

But you see, this mentality of “if our people won’t benefit, it’s a no go area”. That’s our problem.

Since schools reopened in January, Junior High School teachers have been teaching using the new JHS CCP curriculum without any training. Invariably, the students and teachers have been handicapped by the lack of training for teachers.

The training can equally be carried out via online workshops to help teachers acquire the needed insight. Again, the GES can use the GL-TV to provide this all-important training for teachers. The training can be decentralized so that, each district has its own training to ensure the knowledge gap of teachers is dealt with as far as the implementation of the JHS CCP curriculum is concerned.

Currently, teachers do not have the relevant textbooks to teach the subjects and have also not received the training needed to implement the curriculum as expected.

What are we doing to our education, teachers, and JHS students? GES and MOE, the time to wake up is now.
