New contract talks begin: What lies ahead for Arsenal?
Arsenal’s next steps are crucial as they face stiff competition from Pep Guardiola’s team, who are just one point behind in the table with a game in hand. The title race is heating up as the season progresses, and Arsenal’s recent 5-0 victory against Chelsea must serve as a foundation for success as they prepare for the upcoming North London derby against Tottenham on Sunday.
Gabriel attracted interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia last summer, but Arsenal showed no interest in letting him go.
The centre-back initially lost his place in the team during the end of the transfer window, however he has won it back to become a regular.
“It was tough, obviously at the start. I wanted to play and it was very difficult for me but I understood what the coach had to do,” Gabriel told the PA news agency in February.
“(Arteta) spoke to me and obviously explained the reasons behind the decision. Why I should stay – but the most important thing was to remain focused and concentrate – he knew how important I was to the team, so I’m happy to be back and to be able to help the team in every game.
