Cedi ranked 7th strongest currency in Africa in Q1 2025
At the end of the period of the first quarter of 2025, the Ghana Cedi has been ranked 7th as the strongest currency in Africa, with a value of GH¢15.48 to one US dollar. This ranking was made by the Forbes currency calculator.
Regardless the strong position of the Cedi, it faced a 5.3% depreciation on the interbank market between January and March 2025.
In addition, it lost nearly 3.0% to the US dollar in the retail market.Due to that, it casted a long shadows across the government operations, businesses, entrepreneurs and consumers.
Moving on, the Tunisia’s Dinar demonstrated exceptional strength currency in Africa, worth 3.09 to one US dollar. The Libyan Dinar also, Botswana’s Pula, Morocco’s Dirham, Eritrean Nakfa and Seychelles Rupee, came subsequently 2nd to 6th positions, respectively.
South African Rand, Namibian Dollar and Lesotho Loti were at the 8th, 9th, and 10th position respectively. The top five most traded currencies experienced modest gains compared to the previous month.
Forbes drew to attention that a strong and stable currency is a critical economic property, particularly for African nations focusing on sustained development and international competitiveness. A stable currency also provides a safety net against economic shocks, maintaining economic confidence and security.
For instance, Kenya’s shilling has remained steady because of foreign inflows from NGOs and remittances.
