The Beacon of Light: The new literature book JHS and BECE in Ghana

The Beacon of Light is the lastest new literature book to be used by learners in JHS at the besic school level.  It will also be used for the BECE assessment in Ghana by WAEC per the NaCCA.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has approved a new literature book called The Beacon of Light, a prescribed literature textbook authored by Joshlyn Yayra Diabo, Bryte Okrah, Adam Ankrah, and Lucas Zanyoh for all Junior High Schools in Ghana. The book will also be used for future BECE assessments.

This book has been supplemented by The Beacon of Light Commentary, authored by Victoria Stevens, Dr. Jemima Larteley Mensah, and Very Revered Ebo Ephraim, which is said to provide deep insights and understanding of the book while enhancing comprehension to pupils reading it.

The Beacon of Light has been designed to improve and enhance the critical thinking level of students, problem-solving and literacy levels as well as their moral values.

As we all know, literature provides learners with entertainment. It also serves as a mirror through which we learn the cultural norms of other people. Literature is information-orientated as it imbues people with knowledge and permits the vision of the world being a global village. Learning literature exposes learners to the beauty and power of language and also the realities of human existence. It introduces learners to quality education.

Moreover, a passion for literature amongst learners will have many benefits through socialisation and awareness of a wider world with its opportunities. Learners who experience this course will gain insights, above all, into their own humanity.

This literature book also comes to replace the well-known Cock Crow, which has been used by students for over 13 years, compelling examiners to repeat test materials.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), West African Examination Council (WAEC), and Ghana Education Service (GES) are confident that The Beacon of Light will have a crucial improvement in the quality of education in schools.

However, the Beacon of Light will be studied as part of the English Language Curriculum. Teachers and learners preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in 2027 should note that The Beacon of Light will be examined.
