Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has been admitted as a Full Member of the World Patients Alliance (WPA), a development that strengthens the organisation’s engagement in patient rights, health advocacy and human rights at the global level.
The membership approval was formally communicated to HRRG on behalf of the Board of Directors of the World Patients Alliance, following the organisation’s successful application for membership.
HRRG has welcomed the development as an important milestone in its efforts to broaden its human rights advocacy and strengthen its engagement with international organisations working to promote patient empowerment, access to healthcare and human dignity.
The World Patients Alliance is a global organisation committed to strengthening and amplifying the voice of patients and patient organisations around the world. Its work focuses on patient empowerment and engagement, improved access to healthcare, safe and innovative treatment, and patient-centered healthcare.
Through its global network, WPA provides opportunities for patient organisations and other stakeholders to collaborate, share knowledge and contribute to conversations on issues affecting patients at international, regional and national levels. The Alliance also promotes greater recognition of patients’ experiences and perspectives in healthcare policy and practice.
Strengthening the Human Rights-Healthcare Nexus
For HRRG, the membership provides an opportunity to deepen its work at the intersection of human rights, healthcare, social justice, media advocacy and community empowerment.
The organisation believes that access to quality healthcare and respect for human dignity are fundamental to the protection and promotion of human rights.
HRRG also maintains that patients should not merely be recipients of healthcare but should have their voices heard and their perspectives meaningfully considered in decisions and policies affecting their health and wellbeing.
The organisation said it looks forward to bringing its experience in human rights reporting, advocacy, public education and community engagement to the WPA community, while learning from other members and exploring opportunities for collaboration.
Amplifying Patient Voices
HRRG said its membership of the WPA is consistent with its broader commitment to ensuring that the voices of vulnerable and marginalised people are recognised in public discourse and policymaking.
The organisation intends to use the new platform to contribute to conversations around patient rights, empowerment, healthcare access, inclusion and human dignity.
“Healthcare is a human right, and every patient deserves to be heard, respected and treated with dignity,” the organisation said.
HRRG believes that meaningful patient participation can contribute to the development of healthcare systems that are more inclusive, responsive and centred on the needs of the people they serve.
HRRG Expresses Appreciation
Human Rights Reporters Ghana has expressed its appreciation to the Board of Directors and the entire World Patients Alliance team for welcoming the organisation into the global alliance.
HRRG said it looks forward to actively participating in the WPA community, strengthening relationships with fellow members and contributing to initiatives that advance patient rights and empowerment in Ghana, Africa and beyond.
The new membership adds to HRRG’s growing engagement with regional and international networks focused on human rights, social justice, inclusion and sustainable development.
