Ghanaian students in Hungary cry out over 11 months of unpaid stipends
Ghanaian students studying in Hungary are experiencing financial hardship, facing 11 months of unpaid financial support and two years of unpaid book allowance.
As per the students, persistent financial shortfalls has led to a crisis that “jeopardizes our education, well-being, and future chances.”
The students have repeatedly tried to engage government officials, but their attempt have been unsuccessful. As a result, a lot of them are facing severe difficulties, including extreme financial hardship, academic challenges, psychological strain, and negative consequences for their quality of life.
The Ghanaian students stated that “Many students are now experiencing dire hardships, including severe financial distress, academic challenges, psychological strain, and negative impacts on their health and well-being. The lack of stipend payments has made it nearly impossible for many to meet basic living expenses, including rent and utilities. Many now find themselves in precarious living situations and at serious risk of homelessness.”
The students are passionately urging the Government of Ghana to take immediate action to address the situation. The students appealed to the government saying “We urge the government to prioritize the release of the 11 months’ outstanding stipend and two years’ book allowance payments to ensure students can meet their basic needs and continue their education without further interruptions.”
They are also fighting for a consist payment plan, additional financial aid and support systems, and a collaborative discussion with government leaders.
They stressed that “Regular communication between government representatives and student organizations is crucial to ensure that students’ concerns are voiced, understood, and addressed promptly.” The students highlighted that this issue does not affect their present only but about safeguarding Ghana’s future by investing in its young leaders.
“We sincerely hope that the government and other stakeholders will heed this urgent call to action and come to our aid before any further disasters, ” they added.
The situation shows the need for immediate and continued attention to support Ghanaian students studying abroad. Officials at the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat say they are in talks with the Hungarian government and students studying there toresolve the issue.
