Cyber fraud surges to GH₵4.4million in first quarter of 2025
The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has increased alarm over an important increase in online fraud, with financial losses boosting to GH₵4.4 million between the month of January and March 2025. This spots a sharp increase from the GH₵2.4 million documented during the same period in 2024.
According to the CSA, 350 cases of cyber fraud have been reported so far this year, as scammers utilize digital programmes to aim unwary victims.
While Eid celebrations is in process and other upcoming Easter festivities, the CSA has warned the general public to be vigilant against cybercriminals who take merits of elevated commercial activity during these periods.
The Authority highlighted some three major strategy:
– Fraud Web-based Shops: Scammers fabricate fake online stores or imitate licit businesses on social media, coaxing fatality with heavily discounted prices. Fatalities send money but never receive their purchases.
Brand Imitating: Fraudsters utilize search engine results to display fake business listings, entrapping clients into engaging with fraudulent contacts. Once a payment is made, victims are obstructed, and the promised goods or services never show up.
– Phishing Scams: Fraudsters send deceiving emails or messages acting as businesses, romantic partners, or organisations offering festive deals. Clicking on these links can install antivirus or steal sensitive personal information.
Public need to exercise caution
Advice was given to online customers by the CSA to take preventative measures when shopping online:
Ratify Online Retailers: Use worthy e-commerce platforms and check reviews before making purchases.
– Avoid Advance Payments: Only pay after checking and receiving the item. Make sure mobile money transactions are made to appropriate business accounts.
– Beware of Too-Good-To-Be-True Deals: Unrequested messages vowing massive discounts could be fraud.
– Protect Personal Information: Do not share Bank account numbers, Ghana card details or credit card information with sources that are unknown.
The CSA has also encouraged the public to report suspected cyber fraud experience via its 24-hour helpline: Call or Text – 292, WhatsApp – 0501603111, or Email – report@csa.gov.gh.
Issued by the Cyber Security Authority on March 28, 2025, the public alert emphasize the growing threat of cybercrime in Ghana and the need for increasing awareness during festive seasons.
