GRA refunds E-Levy deductions after abolition
Electronic Transaction Levy, popular called E-Levy, kicked in fully on Thursday as the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) permitted its reversal upon the President’s assent of the Bill that eliminated the levy.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has since restate that the E-Levy has been officially eliminated as of April 2, 2025, and that any abstraction made beyond that date would be fully payed back to individuals that were affected.
It highlighted that from 00:00 hours on April 2, 2025, no-one should be charged the levy, as it had been removed completely from the country’s tax laws.
“We do admit that there are practical imputations in clearing the system. However, pany person who were charged E-Levy in transactions from April 2 onwards will have their money payed back associating with the President’s directive and the law,” Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, the Commissioner General of the GRA, said yesterday on the sidelines of a two-day GRA management setting back in Akosombo.
Two of the charging entities have since communicated to their customers of the elimination of the E-Levy charge. A message from AT Money to customers said E-Levy had been scrapped from April 2, 2025.
“Equally, all E-Levy charged from April 2, 2025 onwards will be payed back within 3 days,” the message said. For its part, MTN Mobile Money said the one per cent E-Levy had been removed and no longer applies to “your mobile money transactions”.
Mr Sarpong said the GRA had started charging entities such as mobile money operators or vendors and banks ahead of the levy’s abolishment to make sure there is always a smooth transition.
He, however, accepted that some systems were still in the process of being updated.
He said “We had come into conclusion with them that by the morning of April 3, all charging systems should be taken off, but if for any reason someone has been charged with the levy we will reconcile with the charging entities and make sure all customers that were charged are duly payed back”.
A reminder to all charging entities from the GRA late last Wednesday said the GRA Electronic Transfer Levy Management and Assurance System would automatically return a “no charge” on all transactions posted to it by entities from midnight.
