Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO sacked
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, has announced the termination of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr. Adam Atiku. The change takes effect now.
During the Joy FM’s NewsNight on Tuesday evening, Mr. Akandoh said an official letter had been submitted to inform Dr. Atiku of his dismissal. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh stated that “We have thanked him for his services. We believe it’s time for someone else to take over as CEO. He has been sacked with immediate effect.”
In response to questioning if Dr. Atiku had agreed to the decision or planned to challenge it, Mr. Akandoh replied, “I don’t know yet.”
The Minister explained that the dismissal was not only because of a current incident at the hospital. He also highlighted that the selection committee does not need to explain recruitment and termination decisions.
This move follows a tragic loss on Sunday, leading to significant concerns. The Minister visited the facility on Tuesday to better understand what happened.
During his tour, Mr. Akandoh said he was concerned about how a doctor explained the incident. The doctor’s comments appeared dismissive to him and felt they demonstrated a lack of comprehension regarding the issue’s seriousness. He said that “When a life is lost, it is very important we all show concern, especially when people believe it could have been avoided.”
The Minister also expressed discontent about how the hospital is managing its equipment and resources. He blamed the staff for not maintain or replace government-supplied medical tools.
“There were a lot of things I was not happy about. Equipment purchased by the government is being left unused because it hasn’t been maintained or replaced,” he added.
A committee has been set up to investigate the recent death and other issues at the hospital. Meanwhile, the public awaits the outcome of the investigation and the appointment of a new CEO.
BACKGROUND
Bavug Salim, the deceased, was immediately transferred to the red zone of the Emergency Ward of the hospital in a coma, but was claimed to have been left alone for several hours for unknown reasons, leading to his death.
The incident triggered widespread outrage in the Tamale metropolis and on social media, with many seeking for immediate investigations into the matter.
As a result of the incident, the minister has established a panel of probe the event leading to the patient’s death. The committee is expected to present its report within two weeks.
