Starlink to Launch Operations in Ghana by August 2024

Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has officially announced that Starlink, the satellite internet service provider founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, is set to commence its operations in the country by the end of August 2024. This highly anticipated rollout comes after the company has successfully navigated all necessary administrative and licensing procedures mandated by the NCA.

In a statement released on August 22, 2024, the NCA confirmed that the decision to allow Starlink to operate in Ghana follows rigorous evaluations and licensure approvals. According to the NCA, the internet services offered by Starlink will be managed under the entity SpaceX Starlink GH LTD, ensuring compliance with local regulations.

Previously, the NCA had raised concerns regarding Starlink’s operations in Ghana, asserting that the company lacked the necessary licensing to offer its services. As a result, the regulator sees the online sale of Starlink’s service as illegal, referring violations of the Electronic Communications Act. The NCA repeated that any internet service provider must obtain official authorization before operating within the country. They also warned Ghanaians against using Starlink’s services without the proper license.

Despite these initial issues, Starlink has now received the green light from the NCA.
