President Mahama welcomes Vice President after health break in the UK

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has returned to Ghana after recovering fully from an illness that kept her away from her official duties for several weeks.
She arrived from London, United Kingdom, and was warmly welcomed at the Kotoka International Airport by President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.

President Mahama shared news of her return during a stop on his “Thank You Tour” in Dodowa, in the Greater Accra Region, on Friday, May 16.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is said to have fallen ill on Friday, March 28, 2025, and was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) the next day. Based on medical advice, she started a three-week leave on April 7 and travelled abroad for further treatment as a precaution.
In a short speech after her arrival, the Vice President expressed deep gratitude to Ghanaians for their support and prayers. She also thanked her doctors and the medical team at UGMC for their care. She specially acknowledged President Mahama and his brother Ibrahim Mahama for their kindness and support during her recovery.
President Mahama, speaking at his event in Dodowa on May 16, said he was grateful that the Vice President had regained her health. “I’m happy to state that I spoke to her yesterday morning, and she will be back in the country before the end of next week. By God’s grace, she is fully recovered and she’s going to come and go back to her duties,” he announced.
While the Vice President was away, some members of the public expressed concern about her health, with rumors even suggesting she had passed away. However, government officials dismissed those claims.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed during that period that the Vice President was in good health and receiving the necessary care.
With her return, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang is expected to resume her public duties and continue her work alongside President Mahama.

Mahama pledges continued support for press freedom and journalist safety.
