Pakistan backs Trump for Nobel Peace Prize amid India-Pakistan ceasefire claims

Pakistan has announced plans to nominate former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him for what it calls his key role in negotiating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during a recent conflict.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Pakistani government said Trump deserves the honor “in recognition of his decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis.” The statement praised Trump’s efforts as a true act of peacekeeping, adding that he showed “great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi.”
The ceasefire, which was announced in May after four days of intense fighting between the two nuclear-armed nations, was described by Trump as a result of U.S. mediation. However, India has strongly denied that any outside party played a role and says it does not support third-party intervention in its affairs with Pakistan.
Trump, who has long voiced his belief that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, reiterated last month that the U.S. helped end the conflict by using trade talks as leverage. “I said, ‘Come on, we’re going to do a lot of trade with you guys (India and Pakistan). Let’s stop it,’” Trump told reporters.
So far, neither India nor the United States government has officially responded to Pakistan’s proposal.
Reactions within Pakistan have been mixed. Mushahid Hussain, a former chair of Pakistan’s Senate Defence Committee, supported the move, saying, “Trump is good for Pakistan… If this panders to Trump’s ego, so be it.” He also suggested that many European leaders have also tried to win Trump’s favor.
However, others were critical. Former Pakistani ambassador to the U.S., Maleeha Lodhi, called the decision “unfortunate.” She wrote on X: “A man who has backed Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza and called Israel’s attack on Iran ‘excellent’… It compromises our national dignity.”
Trump, meanwhile, posted on Truth Social expressing doubt he’ll ever win: “No, I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do.”
Although Trump began his presidency with promises to resolve global conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Gaza wars, lasting peace in those regions remains out of reach.
