NUGS Rolls Out Stipends Scheme For PWDs
The Scholarship Board under the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has introduced a new policy called the “NUGS Stipends Scheme”, a policy which aims to relieve Persons with disabilities from financial burden.
NUGS’ new policy, “The NUGS Stipends Scheme” targets Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) particularly in public universities in Ghana.
During an official event launch for the policy, the president of NUGS Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh explained that the policy’s purpose was to provide financial aid to students who have financial challenges affording a three square meal, clothes or educational materials and other pertinent needs.
“The Union in the past months has received several students at its secretariat with issues of insufficient resources to maintain a healthy diet and to fulfil other basic needs of life”, the NUGS President disclosed.

Mr Kyeremeh Oppong said from the ongoing experiences it had become clear that many students are facing similar challenges in the public universities of Ghana.
He highlighted that financial challenges had become pressing and therefore it was necessary for NUGS to come to the aid of such students.
“This project also seeks to support the government’s passion towards the provision of quality education to the people of Ghana”, Mr Kyeremeh emphasised.

Additional Information:
The NUGS President also noted that Sustainable Development Goal 4 talks about attaining quality education.
This, he stated includes students having peace of mind to focus on their education.
The Stipends Scheme Project, Mr Kyeremeh noted seeks to promote the attainment of the SDG goal 4.
Other Activities:
Talking about some of the projects aside from the Stipends Scheme, Mr Kyeremeh said his office is determined to explore all other avenues to make life bearable for Ghanaian university students across Ghana and beyond the shores of the country.
Currently, he said NUGS were involved in large-scale farming.
This, he noted would soon be turned into business so that while they feed students with the produce they could sell the rest to have income to cater for other needs of Ghanaian students.
“We are currently cultivating cassava, maize and some vegetables on some ten (10) acres of land and we also have 1000 pieces of catfish as we plan to expand in no time to serve the purpose we have in mind”, Mr Kyeremeh stressed.
