Government To Construct Temporary Drainage on Kasoa-Winneba Section of N1
In a move to address the flooding situation on the Kasoa-Winneba section of the N1, the government has announced plans to construct a temporary drainage system to lessen the issue.
The decision comes after a recent downpour caused heavy flooding on the stretch, resulting in traffic congestion and disruption to commuters.
According to the Head of Drainage at the Ghana Hydrological Authority, Richard Kofi Amekor, “There’s an existing pipe which is about 1.2 metres in diameter lying parallel to the road, and we are going to create chambers within this pipe so that when it rains, some of the water can flow through those chambers into the outfall.”
This temporary drainage system will be constructed along the stretch to make it easier for water and debris to flow during rainfall.
The construction of the main storm drain is still ongoing, but due to the urgency of the situation, officials have deemed it necessary to create temporary chambers to alleviate the flooding issue.

The main storm drain is expected to be completed within the next 17 months and will feature built-in sand traps that will collect sand carried by water for easy desilting.
The Ghana Hydrological Authority is also working on constructing a 1.6-kilometre storm drain from Kasoa Old Barrier to the West Hills Mall area, which will help to alleviate the flooding issue on this stretch.
The authority will also sign a memorandum of understanding with the municipal assembly for routine maintenance of the drainage system when it is completed.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has acknowledged that there is a serious storm drainage issue in the area and has promised to work with engineers from both his ministry and the Ghana Hydrological Authority to come up with a plan to ensure that all interventions are coordinated.
“One thing that I’ve realised is that there’s the need for more collaboration between the two ministries in order to address some of these challenges,” he said.
The construction of the temporary drainage system is a welcome relief for commuters who have been facing heavy traffic congestion and disruption on the stretch due to flooding.
The area is notorious for heavy vehicular traffic, and rainy days only exacerbate the situation. Commuters have been complaining about the lack of traffic wardens and chaos on the roads, making it a challenging situation for many.
With this new development, it is hoped that commuters will soon be able to travel safely and efficiently on this stretch without worrying about flooding.
The Ghana Hydrological Authority has assured that it will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the drainage system is completed as soon as possible and that it meets international standards.
The government’s decision to construct a temporary drainage system at Kasoa-Winneba road is an indication to its commitment to addressing the challenges faced by commuters in Ghana.
The construction of this drainage system is expected to not only alleviate flooding on this stretch but also improve overall road safety and reduce traffic congestion in the area.
In related news, commuters have been advised to exercise caution when driving on this stretch during rainfall, as water levels may rise rapidly.
The Ghana Hydrological Authority has also warned that flooding can occur at any time, especially during heavy rainfall, and has advised residents and motorists to be prepared.
As the government continues to work on resolving this issue, commuters can expect improvements in road safety and traffic management in the coming months.
