Ghanaian students Under Government Scholarships in Hungary struggle as stipend payments delay

The plight of Ghanaian students in Hungary has come into sharp focus as the Ghana Students Association in Hungary (GASH) voices its concerns over delay in stipend payments by the ghaianian government, a situation that has left approximately 215 students facing significant financial difficulties.
These delays, spanning over six months, have affected students across various levels of study, including undergraduate, Masters, and PhD programs, challenging their ability to sustain themselves far from home.
The financial strain is not just a matter of inconvenience; it has serious ramifications for the students’ academic performance and mental health. The stipend, part of the scholarship agreement between Ghana and Hungary, is crucial for covering living expenses in Hungary, where the cost of living has been on the rise.
The Hungarian government has upheld its part of the scholarship provisions, yet the expected support from the Ghanaian side has been conspicuously absent, leaving students in a precarious situation.
The students’ distress is compounded by the high cost of living in Hungary, making the delayed payments not just a financial but also an existential crisis.

Despite reaching out to various Ghanaian authorities, including the Government, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, the students’ appeals appear to have fallen on deaf ears, with no immediate resolution in sight.
This situation highlights a broader issue of how financial uncertainties can severely disrupt the educational and personal lives of international students.
The immediate call to action is for the Ghanaian government and relevant stakeholders to address the payment delays urgently, ensuring that these students can continue their studies without the added pressure of financial instability.
It’s a plea for support, understanding, and quick action to uphold the educational aspirations and well-being of Ghanaian students abroad, underscoring the importance of reliable and timely financial support in the realm of international education.
