Oh Ghana! Meet former NHIA Board member, Dennis Addo, who received scholarship for the ‘needy’

Investigative reporting by The Fourth Estate, spearheaded by journalist Manasseh Azure, has spotlighted Dr. Dennis Addo, a prominent figure and former NHIA Board member, for receiving a scholarship aimed at assisting needy Ghanaian students.

Dr. Addo, known for his roles as the CEO of Claron Hospital and co-founder of the acclaimed health app Bisa, reportedly received substantial financial aid to pursue a degree in Public Administration at Harvard University.
This revelation raises questions about the allocation of scholarships by the Ghanaian Scholarship Secretariat, as Dr. Addo, who served on the National Health Insurance Authority board from 2017-2020, was granted USD 50,031 for tuition and living expenses in the United States in 2019.
Despite holding a position that suggests financial stability, Dr. Addo also benefited from the Cheng Fellowship at Harvard University, further highlighting the dual financial support during his studies.
The report not only challenges the fairness in the distribution of educational grants but also casts a spotlight on Dr. Addo’s political affiliations.
Identified as a pioneering member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) TESCON and a recent contestant in the NPP’s parliamentary primary, Dr. Addo’s case exemplifies the broader concerns regarding the management and accessibility of scholarships intended for the underprivileged in Ghana.
