Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) to Embark on Peaceful Demonstration
The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has announced its intention to stage a peaceful demonstration on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, to express its displeasure over the imposition of a five percent excise tax on all locally manufactured plastic products. The demonstration is expected to kick off from Kwame Nkrumah Avenue and end at the Ministry of Finance.
According to a statement signed by Ebow Botwe, President of the Association, the decision to embark on the peaceful protest is necessitated by the failure of the Ministry of Finance to respond to their request for consultation on the implementation of the excise tax. The association claims that it has been waiting since April 2024 for a response to its letter of request for a meeting.
The GPMA has threatened to stop production for a week if its demands are not met, citing the devastating impact of the excise tax on their businesses. The association believes that the tax will lead to increased costs, making it uneasy for them to remain competitive in the market.
