GES introduces self-placement system for teachers
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched a new self-placement system for 12,720 newly qualified teachers who have completed their degree programs at colleges of education and successfully passed their licensure exams.
This innovative approach aims to streamline the placement process, offering greater flexibility and addressing some of the significant challenges faced by new teachers.
Following an invitation from the GES for employment on May 11, 2024, over 20,000 applications were received from qualified teachers. From these, 12,720 candidates were selected in the first batch.
These successful candidates are now required to visit the GES portal between July 5 and July 31, 2024, to complete the self-placement exercise.
At a press conference held at the GES headquarters in Accra on Thursday, July 4, the Director-General of GES, Eric Nkansah, provided detailed insights into the new system.
He explained that the self-placement system was designed to address various challenges faced by teachers, including language barriers and financial difficulties.
“The self-posting recruitment model benefits newly trained teachers by allowing them to be posted to regions where language will not be a barrier. This ensures that they can communicate effectively in the local language, fostering a more productive teaching and learning environment,” Nkansah stated.
He emphasized that the self-placement system not only allows teachers to select schools where they can easily integrate into the community but also enables them to be closer to their families.

“Teachers can choose schools that are near their families, which provides them with essential economic support and stability,” he added.
Nkansah further elaborated on the process, noting that the steps to access the platform and select the preferred school are straightforward and available on the GES promotion platform, the same one used during their application.
This continuity ensures that the teachers are already familiar with the system, making the process more user-friendly.
The introduction of this self-placement system marks a significant shift in how newly qualified teachers are deployed in Ghana.
By allowing teachers to have a say in their postings, the GES aims to enhance job satisfaction and retention rates among educators.
This system is expected to create a more motivated and effective teaching workforce, ultimately benefiting the students and the broader educational landscape in Ghana.
The GES’s move to implement this system reflects a broader trend towards more decentralized and teacher-friendly policies in the education sector.
It recognizes the critical role that teachers play in shaping the future of the nation and aims to provide them with the support and flexibility they need to perform their duties effectively.
As the July 31 deadline approaches, the GES urges all newly qualified teachers in the first batch to complete their self-placement promptly to ensure a smooth transition into their new roles.
This initiative is a promising step forward in improving the educational experience for both teachers and students in Ghana.
