GFA to Decide Otto Addo’s Future as Head Coach: Henry Asante Twum Reveals
According to Henry Asante Twum Reveals, Ghana Football Association (GFA) Will Decide Otto Addo’s Future as Head Coach of the Ghana Black Stars
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to make a decision regarding the future of Coach Otto Addo as the head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana. This announcement was made yesterday by GFA communications director Henery Asante Twum during a media briefing. This year, 2024, has been one of Ghana’s worst years since playing football failing to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations Tournament, which will be held in Morocco next year and also breaking some negative records along the line.
Otto Addo, former Ghanaian and Borussia Dortmund winger, was first appointed as an interim coach to take charge of the Black Stars after the dismissal of Serbian coach Milovan after a poor performance at the 2021 African Cup of Nations Tournament. The Dortmund-based coach was appointed during a challenging period in 2022 to lead the team to qualify for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. The team was able to book a place in the tournament after a historic qualification over their West African rivals Nigeria. Coach Addo was then given a permanent contract.
Under his management, the Black Stars have experienced mixed fortunes. While his tactical and player development skills have been praised, results from the team have been inconsistent. Ghana had a poor performance under coach Addo in the 2022 World Cup, as the team was not able to progress beyond the group stage, losing to Portugal and Uruguay and winning their only game in the tournament against South Korea.
Coach Addo then resigned from his duties as the head coach of the Black Stars after their poor performance at the FIFA Qatar World Cup but was then employed by the Ghana Football Association again in 2024 to lead the Black Stars to the 2025 African Cup of Nations Tournament. During the qualifications, the Black Stars were housed in the same group as Sudan, Niger, and Angola but managed not to win a game and to the extent of not even qualifying to the AFCON tournament . They ended up finishing third in the group.
Ghana Football Association Communication Director Henry Asante Twum has emphasized that the GFA will decide the future of coach Otto Addo in the coming weeks after the Executives Council had a board meeting today on whether Otto Addo is staying or not. Twum stated to the press that a decision will be communicated to the general public after the decision has been made. Coach Otto Addo recorded a win rate of 25.7% this year.

Then the Ghana Football Association, led by Kurt Edwin Simeone Okraku, will then look for a coach to take charge of the Black Stars if a decision is made to sack Otto Addo. The team is currently second in the World Cup Qualifiers with 10 pts, the same as Comoros, who is in the first position. The Ghana national team will need miracles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Fans are already annoyed with coach Otto Addo and his boys because the team could not make it to next year’s AFCON and will need to qualify for the World Cup in 2026.
