Former Hearts of Oak number 1 and the Ghana National Team goalkeeper Richard Attah has signed a 2 year deal with division 2 side Port City FC making a new chapter in his career. This transfer move has stirred some conversations between football fans and pundits on why Attah will make such a decision.
Richard Attah who was born in Ghana on 9th April 1995 in Ghana. He started his professional football career with Eastern Region based division one club Okyeman Planners F.C. His tenure at the Eastern Regional based club saw him catching the attention of some bigger clubs in the country. He later moved to Central Region based club Elmina Sharks in 2017 where he had his first taste of the Ghanaian top tier. In the 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League season he made a significant leap by joining one of Ghana’s most oldest and decorated club Accra Hearts Of Oak. In 2021 the then head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana Milovan Rajevac handed Richard Attah’s first call-up to the national team to join the team to the 2021 African Cup Of Nations tournament which was held in Cameroon.
The Ghanaian goalkeeper won his first ever silverware with the Phobians in the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season ending the club’s 12 year trophy drought. He also contributed to the team winning the MTN FA cup that same season. The goalkeeper is well known by the Phobians for his commanding abilities in the box, sharp reflexes and also his leadership since he was one a captain at the club.
The decision to join Port City FC has raised eyebrows. Many football fans are asking the goalkeeper why he will choose to join a Division 2 club and not a Premier League team or a Division 1-based club. However, there are several reasons behind this move, of which some are rehabilitation and game time. Richard Attah struggled with injuries and an increase in weight. The goalkeeper was seen gaining a lot of weight in the last 3 seasons and caused him to lose his number 1 goalkeeper’s role at the club. Also, the leadership role at Port City FC may be a reason for him joining the club. Attah is likely to take on the leadership role at the club, mentoring young players.
Port City FC’s acquisition of Richard Attah will boost the team’s morale and their performance. His experience in Ghanaian football can see him helping the team gain promotion to Division 1 and even to the the Ghana Premier League. Also, his popularity will attract attention to the club, increasing the fanbase of the Accra-based club, sponsorship, and also opportunities for media coverage.
Richard Attah will be looking forward to returning to the Ghana Premier League. Whether this move marks the twilight of his career comeback remains to be seen.
