Free SHS was better implemented under NDC- Prof Jane Opoku Agyemang
The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has said that the Progressively Free Senior High School (SHS) program introduced under the John Mahama-led government in 2015 was better implemented compared to the current implementation under the NPP government.
Prof. Opoku Agyemang argued that the NDC’s Progressively Free SHS policy was more comprehensive, providing school bags, books, and other essentials to students, ensuring that there were no complaints about students going to school for four to five years without books. She emphasized that the policy was well-implemented, with no hue and cry from students or parents.
In contrast, she criticized the current Free SHS policy, citing its challenges and inequities. She stated that the next NDC government would review the policy to address its challenges and enhance equitable quality education.
The former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast challenged the NPP to provide evidence that the NDC plans to cancel the Free SHS program if voted into power.
“So, if today they claim the NDC is against Free SHS, then the person is being disingenuous. If anyone has evidence that President Mahama has said he will cancel Free SHS, they should bring the evidence. Don’t believe such people,” she asserted.

Prof. Opoku Agyemang also hinted that the NDC would review the double-track system introduced by the current government, stating that it would remove it and make the policy better.
“Under the NDC, did you hear anything about the double track? John Dramani Mahama has stated that he will review the policy, remove double track, and make the policy better.” she added.
The running mate made these remarks during her visit to Akyem-Tafo in the Eastern Region as part of her tour of the Abuakwa North constituency. She met with party supporters and traditional leaders, including Chief Osabarima Adusei Peasah of Akyem Tafo, who commended President Mahama’s decision to choose a female running mate.
The chief expressed his admiration for Prof. Opoku Agyemang’s competence and welcomed her potential to become Ghana’s first female Vice President. The running mate also visited the 31st December Palm Oil Company at Akyem-Tafo, which was ruined by a fire outbreak months ago. She assured victims that the next NDC government would rebuild the factory to restore their livelihoods.
With Prof. Opoku Agyemang’s comments, it is clear that the NDC is gearing up for a strong campaign focused on education and social welfare issues. As the election season approaches, it remains to be seen how these developments will shape public opinion and sway voters’ decisions at the polls.
