‘Choose a former experienced driver over a careless driver’s mate’ – Mahama to Ghanaians
In the lead-up to Ghana’s presidential election on December 7, 2024, the political landscape is heating with pointed critiques and fervent appeals to the electorate.
Among the voices vying for leadership is former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who has made a compelling appeal to Ghanaians, urging them to prefer experience and proven leadership over what he perceives as untested and reckless governance.
Mahama, leveraging his tenure as a former head of state, positions himself as the quintessential “experienced driver,” metaphorically speaking, in contrast to his opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), whom he suggests plays the role of a “careless driver’s mate.”
This analogy draws a vivid picture in the minds of voters, emphasizing the importance of choosing a leader with a proven track record over one who may lack direct experience in steering the nation’s affairs.
The context for Mahama’s comments was set against a backdrop of economic challenges facing Ghana. Dr. Bawumia, in a speech at the UPSA Auditorium, attempted to dissociate himself from the country’s economic woes, portraying his role as merely supportive to the current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
This declaration by Bawumia provided fodder for Mahama’s argument, suggesting that a deputy with limited influence over the current administration’s direction could hardly be expected to effect change if promoted to the driver’s seat.
In a rousing address in the Upper West, Mahama did not just criticize his opponents but also put forth a vision of recovery and progress.

Alongside his running mate, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, he expressed confidence in their ability to navigate the country towards better fortunes.
His rhetoric cleverly invoked the imagery of a vehicle mishandled by its current drivers, positing that the logical choice for Ghanaians disillusioned with the present government’s performance would be to revert to a leader who has previously navigated the country through turbulent times.
Mahama’s plea to the electorate was clear and straightforward: Why entrust the nation’s leadership to a figure who, by his own admission, has been a mere adjunct to policies and decisions that have not ameliorated the economic struggles of the average Ghanaian?
Instead, Mahama argued, the choice should fall on a leader with a comprehensive understanding of governance and a track record of administration.
