The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that Career Technology, Creative Art and Design, and Arabic will be added to the already existed exam papers.
Career Technology and Creative Art and Design have been derived from the previous Basic Design and Technology subject, and all candidates will be required to sit for these papers.
However, Arabic will be offered as an optional subject for candidates in Islamic basic schools.
This introduction of new subjects has extended the examination period to six days, with exams running from Monday, July 8, 2024, to Monday, July 15, 2024.
According to John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the government has the authority to determine the subjects to be taught and examined in the BECE since it is a Ghanaian examination.
He also mentioned that the registration of candidates has been completed, and preparations for the examination in all forms are well underway.
” The printing exercise will start very soon, and so we are on course,” He said.
In reference to the official timetable released by WAEC, candidates will be tested on various subjects throughout the examination week.
English Language and Religious and Moral Education exams will be written on Monday, July 8, 2024, followed by Science, Computing, Social Studies, and Creative Art and Design in the subsequent days.
Mathematics, Ghanaian Language, French, and Career Technology will also follow suit with Arabic being the final subject to be written on Monday, July 15, 2024.
With the inclusion of the Common Core Curriculum, this year’s BECE candidates will be the first batch to sit for the examination under this new system.
WAEC has highlighted that school and private candidates will be examined differently due to the curriculum changes, aiming to improve the overall learning experience and shift away from rote learning to critical learning skills.
As the countdown to the 2024 BECE begins, students are admonished to use the sample questions provided by WAEC to prepare for the new subjects and ensure they are ready to excel in the examination.
The addition of Career Technology, Creative Art and Design, and Arabic reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing education and providing diverse learning opportunities for students in Ghana.
