Improving Free SHS: Bawumia Focuses on Policy Development

According to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party, there is a need for further improvements in the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
In an interview with Africa Watch Magazine, Bawumia reaffirmed his dedication to the policy’s longevity, emphasizing that it will be secure under his leadership.
The Free SHS policy has faced challenges, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama promising to review it if he comes to power.
However, Bawumia believes the policy has been a “great success” and is committed to its continuation and enhancement.
Under his leadership, Dr. Bawumia plans to construct additional infrastructure, such as classroom blocks, dormitories, and dining facilities for schools in Ghana.
He also promises to invest in teacher training and professional development, focusing on curriculum relevance and alignment with workforce needs.
The Free SHS policy has significantly increased student enrollment in Senior High Schools, according to Bawumia.
He states that the program is a bedrock of the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education for all Ghanaian youth.
The policy has led to increased enrollment, particularly in the poorest regions of Ghana, and has achieved gender parity in senior high-school education with more girls than boys accessing the program.
Despite the policy’s success, Bawumia acknowledges that there are areas for improvement.
He emphasizes that the Free SHS policy has not resulted in a reduction in quality and, in fact, the performance of students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination last year shows that free SHS beneficiaries attained the best results since 2014.
In conclusion, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s commitment to the Free SHS policy showcases the NPP’s dedication to improving education and providing equal opportunities for all Ghanaian youth.
By focusing on infrastructure development, teacher training, and policy enhancements, Bawumia aims to build upon the program’s successes and ensure its continued growth and sustainability for the betterment of Ghana’s education system.
