Two (2) of NPP’s 1 Village 1 Dams in Upper East has killed two persons in separate incidents. The two casualties occurred at different locations after they were drowned in the dams constructed under the 1V1D initiative of the ruling NPP government.
One of the sad incidents occurred on 29th July 2019 in Zuarungu-Gono which is located in the Bolgatanga East District while the other also took place in Ayopia in Bongo, both in the Upper East region.
According to sources, one of the dead is a 12 year old boy by name Akolbono. He is believed to have drowned while swimming in the dam. He has been buried since then.
In a related story, one Awiniboma Akalare, a 20-year-old was also found dead on the same day in 1 Village1 Dam located at Ayopia. This dam was the first to be commenced under the 1V1D initiative. It is alleged that his death is suspected to be a suicide.
The Assemblyman of the area Ateisiba Joseph while responding to an interview on Yem Radio in Bolgatanga said the 20 year old man prior to his death in the dam had shown signs of instability and inordinate actions. Hence it is believed he was attempting to commit suicide by drowning himself in the dam.
Narrating events leading to the death of Awiniboma, the Assembly Member said “The incident happened on Monday.
According to an eyewitness who was passing by [a woman for that matter] saw him lying just by the edge of the dam.
So the lady thought he was dead so she went and told her husband who came around and realized that the guy wasn’t dead.
He asked the deceased why he was lying around there, then he got up and was rather moving into the water.
Another person who was weeding around came and tried to pull him out of the water but he (the deceased) attempted biting the man and that he should leave him”.
So far, the 1 Village1 Dam has claimed 5 lives, the three earlier deaths were reported in Bongo district and Soe in the Bolgatanga Municipality in 2018.
