Weija- Gbawe power crisis: MP demands swift solution
Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Member of Parliament, urges the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), and the Ministry of Energy to address persistent power cuts in Weija-Gbawe, citing disruptions to daily life, economic progress, and critical services.
According to a statement on Friday, April 17, the MP raised significant concerns over the persistent and unannounced power cuts also known as “dumsor”, which have affected communities adversely in the vicinity for some months.
He drew to attention that these power cuts take place without any notice from electricity providers, causing extensive disruption.
the statement emphasized that “These unplanned outages occur without prior notice or communication from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), causing widespread disruption to households, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and businesses.”
Jerry Ahmed Shaib cautioned that the impact of the unstable power supply were far-reaching, impeding economic progress, endangering lives, and adversely affecting the provision of critical services in the constituency. Though he acknowledged that the current power crisis is a nationwide issue, he highlighted that Weija-Gbawe has faced significant challenges.
As per the Weija-Gbawe MP, some areas within the constituency have encountered persistent outages for the past four days, with some incidents continuing for extended duration.
He emphasized that “Despite several engagements with ECG officials aimed at resolving this crisis, there has been no meaningful progress. While we have received assurances of GRIDCo’s intervention, residents of Weija-Gbawe continue to endure the burden of unreliable electricity supply.”
Shaib pointed the importance of addressing the problem and called for swift and decisive steps to ensure a permanent fix of the issue.
He explained the appeal as “respectful but firm,” claiming that the people of Weija-Gbawe need consistent power provision.
