Urgent Call to Action: Coalition of CSO Networks in HIV, TB, and Malaria Demands Government Intervention
In a bold move to address a pressing public health crisis, the Coalition of CSO Networks in HIV, TB, and Malaria earlier today Monday April 8, held a press conference to shed light on a critical issue plaguing Ghana’s healthcare system.
The coalition, comprised of esteemed leaders in the field, including Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin, Elsie Ayeh, Bright Amissah-Nyarko, Prof. Samuel Ato Duncan, Jerry Amoah-Larbi, and Eric Agbozo, is calling for immediate government intervention regarding the lock-up of Global Fund-donated health commodities at Tema Port.
The coalition highlighted the dire situation where vital health supplies, valued at over US$40 million, have been stranded at the port since May 2023.
These essential commodities, ranging from Antiretrovirals for HIV treatment to medications for TB and Malaria, are crucial for the well-being of countless individuals across the country.
The prolonged delay in clearing these supplies has resulted in severe stockouts in healthcare facilities, jeopardizing the lives of patients and adding strain to healthcare workers.
Global Fund, a longstanding supporter of Ghana’s fight against HIV, TB, and Malaria, has allocated substantial funds to bolster the country’s healthcare response. However, bureaucratic hurdles, including exorbitant taxes and port charges, have hindered the timely clearance of these life-saving commodities.
Despite efforts from Global Fund delegates and the coalition, the impasse persists, risking the expiration and safety of the donated medications.
Furthermore, the coalition raised concerns about Ghana’s co-financing commitment for the upcoming Grant Cycle Seven (GC7), emphasizing the need for domestic investments in healthcare to complement Global Fund support. Failure to fulfil this commitment, including the delayed signing of the agreement letter, threatens the disbursement of crucial funds earmarked for health system strengthening.
In response to these critical issues, the coalition announced plans for a mass public demonstration on April 17, 2024, calling on activists and concerned citizens to join their cause.
The demonstration aims to petition the Presidency and Parliament for immediate action to address the stagnant health commodities and fulfil Ghana’s co-financing obligations.
The proposed route of the demonstration, starting from Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange, signifies a united front in advocating for the health and well-being of all Ghanaians.
The coalition’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health underscores the urgency of the situation and the necessity for swift government intervention.
As Ghana stands at a critical juncture in its healthcare landscape, the collective voice of the coalition resonates as a clarion call for action, unity, and accountability in ensuring access to essential healthcare services for all.
