University of Ghana lifts ban on social gatherings, cites improved pandemic situation

About a month ago, the University of Ghana announced the immediate suspension of all social gatherings on campus after a surge in Covid-19 cases.
This directive was issued in an official notice signed by Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. As per a statement on June 25, 2025, the Office of Student Affairs took protective measures to ensure the health and well-being of the university community.
The statement emphasized that “Due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases on the University of Ghana campus, it has become necessary to suspend all social gatherings with immediate effect.” The ban affected the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Student Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Room (JCR), together with departmental and school associations. All the upcoming events and activities was put on hold until further notice.
The university encouraged the strict adherence from all student, leaders and stakeholders stressing that the directive is intended to benefit public health on campus during that period. This move was just to heighten warning as the university was trying to tackle the revived danger of the COVID-19 virus on its grounds.
On the 14 July, 2025, the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, officially announced that the ban has been lifted on all social gatherings on campus. The Office of Student Affairs issued a notice and was signed in collaboration with the University Health Services and University Management on Monday, July 14, emphasizing the removal of the ban with immediate effect.
The statement announced that “The restriction on social gatherings on the University of Ghana campus due to the resurgence of COVID-19 has been lifted with immediate effect.”
This decision has created an opportunity for student bodies and campus-based organisations to begin their activities. The notice clearly indicated that groups such as the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), religious groups and departmental and school associations as well are now permitted to organize their weekly celebrations and other events.
The notice stated that “GRASAG, SRC, JCR, religious groups, departmental and school associations are now permitted to organise their week celebrations.” Regardless the removal of the restrictions, the university authorities drew to attention that health and safety must continue to be a major priority. Students and event organisers are expected to adhere to the COVID-19 protective measures to deal with any resurgence.
