UEW have expelled 38 Students for poor performance
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), have expelled 38 Level 100 students for not meeting academic standards. The decision was declared in a statement on March 7, 2025. The action of the university comes after a review of the academic performance of students during their first and second semesters.
As per the university’s official statements, the students did not meet the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 1.0 or failed over the maximum allowance of courses after resits.
The acting Head of Department for Social Studies Education, Dr Mohammed Adam, signed the letter stating the reasons for expulsion. It stated that the involved students were not eligible to take part in Level 200 lectures or participate in examinations for Level 200 courses.
The university stressed that counseling services were offered to the students before their dismissal. The decision corresponds to the regulations enumerated in the Revised Undergraduate Students’ Handbook.
Out of the 38 students expelled, 32 did not meet the required CGPA, while six also went beyond three courses failures. The university provided departments with relevant instructions to update their records accordingly.
This expulsion has resulted to a widespread discussion on social media platforms, with diverse reactions from social media users expressing concern regarding the outcomes to the students affected. Some students among the affected ones have called for a review of academic policies to support students facing challenges. University of Education, Winneba insisted that academic standards were important for sustaining the integrity of its programmes.
The university declared that “This decision is according to with our commitment to maintaining proper academic standards and ensuring that all students meet the necessary requirements for progression.”
The university intends to make sure that all students meet the required standards to progress in their studies.
