TUC to join the FORUM to strike on May 2 if…

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is poised to escalate labor actions by joining the FORUM, an alliance of nine labor unions, in a nationwide strike slated for May 2, 2024.
This move hinges on the government’s handling of the second-tier pension funds, a critical issue long contested by the unions.
Addressing a conference at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region, Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary-General of the TUC, issued a stern warning regarding the impending strike.
“The forum has already issued a strike notice for May 2nd. We want to make it clear to the government that if nothing is done about the second-tier pension by April 30th, TUC will join the strike,” Dr. Baah declared.
He expressed concern over the potential impact of such a strike, stating, “I can’t imagine what will happen in this country if they allow this to happen.”
The FORUM consists of significant labor unions including the Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG), Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Judicial Service Staff Association (JUSAG), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), Ghana Association of Anesthetists, and the Government and Hospital Pharmacist Association (GHOSPA).

Each has expressed solidarity in their demands for the immediate release of the second-tier pension funds, essential for securing their members’ futures.
The looming strike emphasizes the urgency with which these unions view the pension fund issue, reflecting broader concerns over workers’ rights and government accountability in managing public funds.
