Okyenhene Calls for Enactment of Law to Freeze Salaries of irresponsible Parents
The Okyenhene of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has made a passionate appeal to the government to enact a law that would freeze the salaries of parents who neglect their children and wards.
The Okyenhene made this call during the annual Ohum Kan Festival in Kyebi, which also marked the 25th anniversary of his accession to the Ofori Panin Stool.
In his address to chiefs and residents of Akyem Abuakwa, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin expressed concern over the growing trend of parents shirking their responsibilities.
He suggested that the state should utilize frozen salaries to support the education and upkeep of neglected children, emphasizing that this measure would compel parents to fulfill their obligations.
“If this is not done, such children will grow up to become vagabonds, to the detriment of society,” he warned.
“You give birth in your community and abscond to a different town to work without providing for your children’s needs. This is irresponsible. The state should freeze your salaries and use them to take care of the children.”
The Okyenhene also spoke out against unpatriotic conduct by some teaching and non-teaching staff in Senior High Schools.

He called for these individuals to mend their ways or face the full force of the law, noting that such malpractices undermine the free SHS policy.
“Some staff have taken to stealing food meant for students. They must change their ways or be punished by the law,” he declared.
Furthermore, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin urged Ghanaians to rekindle their patriotism and love for the country.
He advised the youth to avoid substances like tramadol and adopt a decent lifestyle.
“The youth should shun tramadol and other substances that can destroy their future.
We need a generation that is productive, innovative, and proud of their heritage,” he said.
He also called on the police to arrest and prosecute drug peddlers and pushers, highlighting the severe impact of their activities on the youth’s development.
“We should not condone drug peddling in our communities. The police should arrest and prosecute these criminals to serve as a deterrent to others,” he emphasized.
The Ohum Festival, which is rooted in the Akan belief in the unity of the living, the dead, and the unborn, serves as a platform for social commentary and leadership reflection.
The Okyenhene’s remarks at this year’s festival highlighted pressing issues affecting Ghanaian society, including parental neglect, education sector malpractices, and drug abuse.
