NDC Runs From Ejisu By-Election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has decided to abstain from the upcoming by-election in the Ejisu Constituency, a decision that underscores strategic prioritization ahead of the general elections in December.
This development follows the death of the sitting Member of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Ampontuah Kumah, which necessitated the by-election scheduled for April 30, 2024.
Ejisu, a stronghold of the ruling NPP, is often referred to as part of the party’s “World Bank” due to its historically strong support for the NPP.
The NDC’s decision to not contest the by-election appears to be a tactical move, considering the low probability of winning the seat in a traditionally NPP-dominated area.
Ishmael Alhassan, the Ashanti Regional Organiser for the NDC, articulated the party’s strategy, stating that contesting the by-election would merely result in unnecessary expenditure of resources that could be better allocated towards the general elections.
Alhassan further emphasized the party’s focus on rallying behind former President John Mahama’s candidacy in the upcoming December polls.
According to him, the decision to skip the by-election is not only a financial consideration but also a moral stance, as the party does not wish to appear as benefiting from the unfortunate demise of MP John Kumah.

While the NDC steps back, the NPP is gearing up for a contested primary to select Kumah’s successor, with nine candidates already cleared to participate in the internal party election set for April 14, 2024.
This internal contest demonstrates the NPP’s readiness to retain their stronghold but also highlights the vibrant internal democracy within the party.
The Electoral Commission, meanwhile, has confirmed that all arrangements for the by-election are in place, ensuring that the electorate in Ejisu will have the opportunity to elect their new representative in a timely manner.
This by-election, albeit without the participation of the NDC, remains a significant political event, reflecting the dynamic and often strategic nature of political contestation in Ghana.
