NAPO re-elected unanimously as Executive Board Member of UNESCO

NAPO re-elected unanimously as Executive Board Member of UNESCO. This means Ghana has been appointed for the next 4 years as one of the 58 members of the governing board of the UN.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Education, got the nod unanimously in Paris at the 40th General Conference of UNESCO to represent Ghana on the board.

His alternate is HE Anna Bossman, Ghana’s Ambassador to France with concurrent accreditation to UNESCO.

The Executive Board Member of UNESCO has varied and important functions it plays for the UN. Among these roles are to serve the UN in an advisory capacity.

The board further has the responsibility to execute relevant programmes of the UN as adopted by the General Conference.

The re-election of Ghana to the Executive Board Member of UNESCO unopposed shows the confidence the UN has in Ghana and the countries excellent contribution to the UN.

Ghana was awarded and recognized not long ago by the UN when UNESCO awarded the Institute of Education Planning and Administration (IEPA) of the University of Cape Coast and the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences(AIMS-Ghana) UNESCO category II status as Centres of Excellence.

When the world converged at the centre of the earth in Ghana in 2018, the world celebrated Press Freedom Day in Accra, this was followed by the visit of the Director General of UNESCO in January this year.

During that importnt visit, she applauded Ghana for the excellent work she contnues to do at the UNESCO and in Africa towards the reliasation of the goals of UNESCO in the areas of improvement in Education, Human Science, Communication and Information. Ghana’s efforts towards Culture related progress were top on the discussion as well.

Ghana’s re-election heralds an era of renewed impetus in driving forward her commitment to SDGs through UNESCO’s work. He called for the support of all the ministries and agencies that work within UNESCO’s field of competencies.
