More than 30 students in hospitals due to food poisoning at Ajumako Afransi Technical Institute
Over 30 students from the Ajumako Afransi Technical and Vocational Institute in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region have been hospitalized after allegedly consuming contaminated food.
The incident has caused significant concern among students, parents, and the local community, highlighting the critical need for stringent food safety measures in educational institutions.
According to Channel One News sources, the students began experiencing severe stomach discomfort shortly after consuming a meal of rice and beans, popularly known as ‘waakye,’ for lunch on Tuesday.
The symptoms quickly escalated, with some students starting to vomit and others becoming incapacitated in their dormitories.
The alarming situation prompted immediate action from the school authorities.
Teachers and staff members rushed to assist the afflicted students, transporting them to the nearby Ajumako Baah and Salvation Army Polyclinic for urgent medical attention.
The rapid response was crucial in stabilizing the students, many of whom were in distress due to the severity of their symptoms.
Upon receiving news of the incident, concerned parents hurried to the hospital and the school to check on their children.
The sense of panic and urgency was palpable as parents sought to understand the condition of their loved ones and the cause of the outbreak.
Daniel Agyeakpor, a Physician Assistant at the Salvation Army Polyclinic, provided an update on the situation.
He explained that preliminary investigations and laboratory tests are being conducted to determine the root cause of the illness.

While most of the students have been stabilized, the exact cause of the food poisoning remains undetermined.
Agyeakpor emphasized the importance of not jumping to conclusions without proper investigation. “It’s too early to conclude without proper investigation,” he told Channel One News.
The administrator of the Salvation Army Polyclinic has appealed for government support to address the issue comprehensively.
The incident has underscored the need for improved health and safety protocols within educational institutions, particularly in the handling and preparation of food.
The administrator highlighted the clinic’s efforts to manage the situation but noted that additional resources and support from the government would be invaluable.
Meanwhile, school authorities have remained silent on the matter, focusing on ensuring the well-being of the affected students and cooperating with health officials in the ongoing investigation.
The lack of immediate comment from the school has left many questions unanswered, adding to the anxiety of parents and the community.
Agyeakpor detailed the symptoms presented by the students, noting that many arrived at the facility overnight with complaints of diarrhea and vomiting.
“As of now, most of them, even all of them, have been stabilized, but we don’t know the root cause,” he said.
“We are now waiting for the lab results, so we cannot conclude on the cause of whatever they’re presented with.”
He further elaborated on the difficulty of diagnosing the exact cause of the outbreak without thorough investigation.
“I can’t tell because I’m not at the school with them. I’m dealing with the conditions they’ve presented with their symptoms. And we can’t diagnose or jump to conclusions without proper investigation,” he stated.
“All we can say is we are undergoing investigations. But overnight, as I said earlier, they started coming, not much, few of them came during the day, which is normal.”
The incident at Ajumako Afransi Technical and Vocational Institute serves as a stark reminder of the importance of food safety in schools.
It highlights the need for rigorous food handling practices and swift emergency response mechanisms to protect students’ health and well-being.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring that such an incident does not recur and that those affected receive the care and support they need.
