Money Will Not Influence My Decision to Return as Black Stars Coach—Kwesi Appiah.
James Kwesi Appiah, the current head coach of Sudan and former coach of the Ghana Black Stars, has been in the news lately for his audacious declaration that his desire to return back as head coach of the Ghanaian national team will not be influenced by financial considerations. The history of James Kwesi Appiah’s time leading the Ghanaian national team is legendary. Kwesi Appiah developed many qualities while leading the Black Stars to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Ghanaian football will never forget the legacy of Kwesi Appiah.
The Ghanaian coach is currently the head coach of war-torn country Sudan, leading them to the 2025 African Cup of Nations tournament, which will be held in Morocco. His side was housed in the same group of his country, Ghana, alongside Angola and Niger. The Ghanaian coach was able to book a place in the tournament after drawing 1-1 with his country in Accra and managed to take a maximum of three points in the return leg, which was held in Libya. His side managed to score 2 goals. In September 2023 the Ghanaian gaffer was announced as the head coach of the Sudan national team.
His side has been putting on some impressive performances since the Ghanaian gaffer joined. Starting with the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, his squad was housed in Group B with Senegal, D.R. Congo, South Sudan, and Mauritania and is currently topping the group with 10 points after 4 matches played.
In a viral video that is trending on social media, the Sudan head coach boldly said that money even as high as $1m a week will not influence me. “Is it the $1m that will be given every week? What will that do for me? I do not value money at my age, but I do things from the heart,” he added, saying that “I do not need to worry myself with anything,” he told the BKB show on YouTube, which is hosted by sports journalist Bright Kankam Boadu.
James Kwesi Appiah’s remarks have demonstrated his patriotism, regardless of whether he returns as head coach of the Ghanaian national team. His goal is to have a significant influence on the Black Stars.
