Mainstream STEM education to be streamlined into Ghana’s education system – Mahama promises
John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has made a bold pledge to revolutionize Ghana’s education system by embedding mainstream Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education throughout the nation.
In a move that aims to expand and enrich the current educational framework, Mahama’s proposal seeks to universalize STEM education, ensuring it is not confined to selected areas but is accessible across all Senior High Schools (SHS) in Ghana.

During a session with students at the Wisconsin International University College on April 3, 2024, Mahama highlighted the critical importance of integrating STEM education within all academic disciplines.
He revealed plans to renovate existing Science Resource Centres and leverage modern laboratories in Community Day Senior High Schools (popularly known as E-blocks) as hubs for STEM education.
This initiative represents a strategic departure from the current government’s approach of establishing standalone STEM schools, aiming instead for a holistic educational experience that incorporates STEM learning across the board.
Mahama’s strategy includes an ambitious infrastructure development component, focusing on the construction of additional Community Day SHSs in densely populated urban locales.
This expansion is poised to address the challenges plaguing the Free Senior High School programme by providing more accessible educational opportunities for Ghana’s youth.
Furthermore, the initiative plans to retrofit the E-blocks with dormitory blocks, catering to students hailing from beyond the local community.
This accommodation feature is a thoughtful addition, ensuring that the geographical barrier does not hinder students’ access to quality education.
Through these measures, Mahama envisions a transformative shift in Ghana’s educational landscape, where STEM becomes a cornerstone of learning for every student, regardless of their chosen field of study.
This commitment to mainstreaming STEM education underscores the recognition of its pivotal role in nurturing a well-rounded, competent, and competitive workforce equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world.
