GIJ @ 60 Eyes Digital Media Hub

As the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) marks its sixty (60) years of existence, under the theme “Celebrating our past: Inspiring our future, it has used the opportunity to challenge itself to establish a Digital Media Hub to keep it abreast with modern trends in communication and journalistic work among others.

The Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) aims at developing the needed capable communicators to help build and sustain Ghana’s nascent democratic institutions, it needs to be abreast with changing trends within the media landscape if it is to remain relevant.

Speaking at the grand durbar of the 60th anniversary at the new premises of the institute located at North Dzorwulu, the rector Prof. Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo in his welcome address said the institute is poised to “figure out how best to take advantage of today’s fast-changing technological and communication environment”.

This has become important due to the complexities and drastic impact that, technology, internet, and social media continue to have on communication. Hence the Digital Media Hub ambition for GIJ.

He called on development partners and all other stakeholders to support the vision of the institute to establish a Digital Media Hub. He said ” We are marking our 60th Anniversary with an ambitious plan to build a world-class Digital Media Hub with leading-edge technology that will serve local and international students, faculty, and professionals.

Prof. Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo said , if achieved, the Digital Media Hub will provide the needed facilities for the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) in the areas of digital audio-visual, online news, and most up to date graphics as well as advertising designs.

Prof. Kwasi Ansu-Kyeremeh, Chairman of GIJ governing council also added his voice to the ambition of GIJ’s to establish a Digital Media Hub. “The institute has set a path to strengthen its technological and program capacity to equip students as to be communication practitioners to meet the expectations of this fast-changing digital age. ” He said.
