During the detailed interview on TV3 News 360, Mr. Yaw Owusu, the Chief Executive Officer of the Railways Development Authority, provided further insights into the incident involving the new Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train on the Tema Railway line.
He stated that Pesa Corporation, the manufacturers of the recently imported train, is committed to handling the costs for the repair of any damages incurred during the incident.
The train, which had collided with a stationary vehicle during a site acceptance test, was promptly moved to the station for a thorough evaluation to assess the extent of the damage, which was still being determined at the time of the report.
In his statement, Mr. Owusu reassured the public about the financial implications of the accident. “The manufacturer will cover the cost of the repairs,” he confirmed.
The CEO clarified that since the train was still under the manufacturer’s custody and had not been officially handed over to the Ghanaian government, Pesa Corporation remained liable for its condition.
He speculated, “And I think they have insurance to cover extra damages,” suggesting that additional costs beyond direct repairs might also be managed without burdening the Ghanaian taxpayers.
The incident raised concerns about the safety measures and operational protocols being employed during the testing phases of new railway equipment.
Mr. Owusu addressed these concerns by stating that an investigation was underway to ascertain the precise cause of the collision.
“We still need to figure out what went wrong and the best course of action to take to make sure that this situation doesn’t occur again,” he explained.
This proactive approach aims to not only rectify the current situation but also to implement enhanced safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
The authorities are keen on ensuring that the integration of new technology into Ghana’s railway infrastructure is conducted seamlessly and safely, reflecting a commitment to revitalizing the transport sector while prioritizing public safety and fiscal responsibility.
