GES must postpone vacation by two weeks due to the COLA strike… Agree or Disagree?

The Ghana Education Service (GES) must start considering the possibility of moving the vacation day for term two from 11th to 1st Sept. due to the COLA strike which lasted some 10 days.

Per the current calendar, schools reopened for the second term on 10th May and are expected to vacate on the 11th of August 2022. If the GES keeps the calendar as it is, learners would have lost two weeks of contact, which cannot be replaced unless the term calendar is extended.

Should the GES extend the calendar by two weeks, it will mean schools will reopen after 11 days of vacation on 13th September 2022.

Thus, learners and teachers would have in total spent 10 days (COLA) strike period at home and the remaining 11 days after vacation on 1st September. Teachers would agree that such a decision will be fair at this critical time.

The extension of term two would help ensure that, the period lost between 4th and 14th July is catered for. The COLA strike started by GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT-GH, and TEWU lasted nearly two weeks.

It would be prudent that the managers of pre-tertiary education consider extending the 2nd term calendar for public schools by some two weeks. This will help teachers to cover topics yet to be treated for the term.

School children have suffered from learning loss as a result of COVID-19 and while we are happy that the government has been able to deal with the strike by providing 15% COLA for teachers and all public sector workers, teachers and non-teaching staff should not complain or have issues with being asked to extend the term by another 2 weeks.

In the coming days, it is hoped that the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education will update education stakeholders on whether they have extended the term by 14 days or not.
