ECG and GRIDCo Join Forces To Enhance Electricity Power Supply Capacity
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have joined hands in a strategic partnership aimed at bolstering the region’s power supply capacity to meet the growing demand for electricity.
In a recent meeting held at GRIDCo’s headquarters in Anwomaso, Ashanti Region, the two entities finalized plans to install a 145MVA power transformer at key points between GRIDCo and ECG Bulk Supply Points.
This initiative involves replacing an existing 50MVA transformer with the larger capacity one to better handle increasing load demands, especially during peak hours between 7 pm-11 pm.

Previously, the 50MVA transformers at Anwomaso BSP experienced strain during peak periods due to surging demand.
With the addition of the 145MVA transformer, the total installed capacity will increase to 245MVA, a significant upgrade from the previous 150MVA (comprising three 50MVA transformers).
This enhancement is expected to improve supply capacity and reliability throughout the region.
During the meeting, discussions also centered on upgrading the Obuasi and Konongo Substations with 50/66 MVA transformers to meet the growing industrial demands in those areas and enhance supply stability.
Plans are underway to dispatch another 145MVA transformer to Ridge BSP soon to boost capacity across the station and the region.
Following the discussions, a site assessment was conducted to determine the best location for installing the 145MVA transformer.
Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, General Manager for Ashanti Sub-transmission, and his team collaborated with GRIDCo to identify an ideal spot that minimizes material costs for cable laying and civil works.
Currently, the region features two Bulk Supply Points, Anwomaso and Ridge, which transmit high-voltage power to primary substations for distribution to end consumers.
Profile Of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG):
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is the main power distribution company in Ghana, responsible for distributing and retailing electricity throughout the country.
ECG was established in 1967 after it was split into two companies, with ECG handling distribution and the Volta River Authority (VRA) managing generation.
ECG serves over 3 million customers across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, providing electricity to urban and rural areas.
The company operates and maintains the electricity distribution infrastructure, including transformers, substations, and power lines, to deliver reliable electricity to consumers.
Profile Of Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo):
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) is the state-owned entity responsible for operating and maintaining the national electricity transmission system in Ghana.
Established in 2006, GRIDCo took over the transmission functions previously handled by the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
GRIDCo manages the transmission of electricity from various generation sources to distribution companies like ECG, ensuring the reliable and efficient delivery of power across the country.
The company oversees the high-voltage transmission network, including substations, transmission lines, and interconnections with neighboring countries, to facilitate the movement of electricity.
The partnership between ECG and GRIDCo is expected to strengthen power supply capacity and meet the increasing electricity demands in the area.
