EC announces mop-up voter registration exercise in August
The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a mop-up voter registration exercise scheduled for August 1 to 3, 2024.
This initiative aims to ensure that all eligible voters are registered before the upcoming elections, providing an opportunity for those who missed the initial registration period.
In a letter signed by Mr. Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, the EC detailed the scope and logistics of the exercise.
According to the letter, the registration will be conducted at EC district offices and prison centers nationwide.
This ensures that even those in detention have the opportunity to register and participate in the electoral process.
The letter, addressed to the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and viewed by newsghana24.com, states: “This comes to inform you that the Commission will conduct a Mop Up Voter Registration Exercise at all the District Offices of the Commission throughout the country. The registration will also be extended to the prison centers. This exercise will take place from Thursday, 1st August to Saturday, 3rd August, 2024.”
The announcement of the mop-up exercise comes as part of the EC’s broader efforts to ensure comprehensive voter registration.
Ensuring that all eligible voters are registered is a critical step in maintaining the integrity and inclusiveness of the electoral process.
The exercise targets those who, for various reasons, were unable to register during the primary registration period.
This could include new eligible voters who have recently turned 18, people who were away or otherwise occupied during the initial registration, and those who faced technical or logistical issues that prevented them from registering.

This aligns with broader democratic principles and international human rights standards that emphasize the right to vote.
