Driver of truck involved in new train accident jailed 6 months

In a recent development that has captured the attention of local authorities and residents alike, truck driver Abel Dzidotor has been jailed to six months in prison for causing a train accident.
The incident, which occurred during a test run of a newly imported train on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, has raised significant safety concerns.
The accident was the result of Dzidotor leaving his Hyundai truck unattended on the railway tracks.
The truck, registered under the number GS 9018 – 20, became stuck after the driver reportedly went to deliver cement blocks and was unable to use an underpass bridge, leading to a collision with the train, which had just arrived from Poland.
Citi News’ Benjamin Aklama reported that Dzidotor faced four charges in court, pleading guilty to three.
These included careless and inconsiderate driving, unauthorized stopping on the railway tracks, and causing unlawful damage.

The court found him in violation of multiple sections of the RTA Act 683 (2004) and its subsequent amendments.
His sentences ranged from paying penalty units to facing months in jail for each charge if the penalties were unpaid.
Specifically, the charge for causing unlawful damage carried a six-month hard labor sentence.
However, Dzidotor pleaded not guilty to the charge of failing to produce a driver’s license, claiming it was inside his damaged vehicle.
The court has given him until May 9, 2024, to present his license, failing which he might face additional penalties.
The Ghana Police Service, which conducted a preliminary investigation into the accident, underscored the critical nature of the event, highlighting the risks and potential disruptions caused by negligence in vehicle operation near railway tracks.
This accident not only resulted in legal consequences for Dzidotor but also serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic and safety regulations to prevent such hazardous incidents.
