Collins Dauda arrested over chaos at Kukuom registration centre in Asunafo South constituency
Collins Dauda gets arrested after he is allegedly reported to have involved in a disturbance at the Kukuom registration center.
Alhaji Collins Dauda, the member of parliament for Asutifi South in the Ahafo region, was allegedly taken into custody by police on Saturday, May 11, 2024, in relation to a commotion that occurred at a registration center in Kukuom, Asunafo South constituency.
According to those with knowledge of the events, thugs broke into the registration center using the legislator’s car and opened fire, seriously injuring at least one person.
However, according to eyewitnesses, Collins Dauda was inside the car during the chaos.
The sources claim that Dauda is currently being held in custody by the police.
Meanwhile, fighting between two factions at a voter registration center at Adu Gyama in the Ahafo Ano South East constituency of the Ashanti region is reported to have injured two people.
A group that included the injured made an effort to stop two students from entering their information in the voter’s book.
An eyewitness said that a representative of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) invited the two ladies to the center for registration.
However, local residents at the center and representatives of political parties disputed their eligibility, claiming they weren’t locals from the area.
Armed people invaded the facility with clubs, machetes, and other weapons after an earlier protest that was temporarily put down. They demanded that Electoral Commission (EC) representatives continue registering the students.
The Electoral Commission begun the limited voter registration exercise for first-time voters and persons who wish to own a voter card on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
The 21-day exercise will end on May 27, 2024.
Chairperson of the EC, Madam Jean Mensa, says the exercise aims at registering approximately 623,000 first-time voters across the country.
“The registration will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And that gives us the figure of 623,000 that we have put there. That is not to say that we cannot go beyond that. We did mention that in 2023, we projected 700,000 people to visit our registration centres.”
