CDD-Ghana and Human Rights Coalition Condemn Passage of Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill
In a strong-worded statement released on Thursday, February 29, 2024, the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD) and the Human Rights Coalition expressed deep concern over the recent passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill by the Parliament of Ghana.
The bill, which was passed by a voice vote on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, has sparked outrage among human rights advocates and defenders of democracy in Ghana.
The organizations criticized the manner in which the bill was pushed through Parliament, citing mass hysteria and fanaticism that stifled meaningful debate and opposition.
Despite the bill’s passage, the CDD-Ghana and the Human Rights Coalition remain steadfast in their belief that the legislation is fundamentally flawed, unconstitutional, and detrimental to the nation’s democratic principles.
They argue that the bill, if enacted into law, would be a significant setback for Ghana and its reputation as a democratic society.
Highlighting the importance of constitutional democracy, the organizations emphasized that the rights of minorities must be protected against the imposition of discriminatory laws by the majority.
They announced their intention to challenge the bill outside of Parliament, urging the Supreme Court to review the constitutionality of the legislation.
The statement further underscored the bill’s potential violations of various constitutional rights, including privacy, freedom of speech, and equality under the law.
The organizations expressed confidence that the bill would fail the constitutional test and called on the President to consider its unconstitutionality before signing it into law.
In a final plea, the CDD-Ghana and the Human Rights Coalition reminded law enforcement authorities to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation.
They urged authorities to refrain from enforcing any provisions of the bill until its legality is confirmed.
The joint statement was signed by the CDD-Ghana and the Human Rights Coalition, reaffirming their commitment to defending human rights and democracy in Ghana.
