Breaking News: GNAT calls Off Strike
In a decisive turn of events, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has instructed the trio of striking teacher unions including GNAT in Ghana to call off their strike with immediate effect.
The directive, aimed at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), comes in the wake of a nationwide strike initiated by these unions on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
Their collective action was a protest against what they described as the government’s inattention to pressing issues affecting their conditions of service.
The teacher unions had highlighted several grievances, including the non-payment of salaries, unilateral modifications to work schedules without prior consultations, and delays in the distribution of laptops meant to aid in their teaching duties.

These issues, they argued, significantly hampered their ability to deliver quality education, prompting their decision to strike as a last resort to draw attention to their plight.
However, the response from the NLC was swift. Through a statement issued by its Chairperson, Justice Kwabena Asuman-Adu, the commission invoked the powers vested in it under Section 133 (1) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
This section of the law empowers the NLC to intervene in disputes that could disrupt the educational sector’s operations, which is considered essential to the nation’s development.
The NLC’s directive was based on the unions’ failure to comply with Section 159 of the same Act, which outlines the legal procedures for declaring a strike.
In compliance with the NLC’s order, GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT are expected to call off their strike and return to the negotiation table to address their concerns through dialogue.
This development underscores the importance of adhering to established legal frameworks in resolving labour disputes and highlights the government and regulatory bodies’ role in ensuring that grievances are addressed within the ambit of the law.
The resolution of this strike is crucial not only for the teachers and their welfare but also for the thousands of students whose education was momentarily disrupted by the industrial action.
