Black Satellites Eliminated From The Ongoing U20 AFCON Tournament
Ghana’s U20 national team, which is also known as the Black Satellites, has ended its journey in the ongoing U20 Africa Cup of Nations Tournament, which is being played in Egypt.
The Ghana national U20 team was drawn to play Egypt, the host country, in the quarterfinal stage of the tournament after they topped their group with a maximum of 7 points.
Egypt’s U20 team was able to win over the Black Satellites through a penalty shootout after both teams were not separated after the full 90 minutes were played with an additional 30 minutes of extra time denning the Ghana U20 team a qualification to the next stage of the competition and a slot to the U20 World Cup which will be played later this year in September.
19-year-old Sherif Momen had the first goal for the Egyptians in the 19th minute. The youngster then again got the 2nd for Egypt on the 27th minute.
Dreams FC’s forward Aziz Issah, who is currently on loan at Barcelona’s B side, pulled one back for the Satellites in the stoppage time of the first half after a long-range effort from his favorite left foot ended as a goal.
The Egyptians then came in the second half to defend their two-goal lead, only for Ghana to get a penalty in stoppage time of the second half for it to be converted by Abdul Sulemana to bring the game back to level 2-2.
The game went to extra time after both teams were not separated in the full 90 minutes of game time. The game then went to penalty shootouts after both sides again could not have a goal in the extra time.
Ghana only scored four of the five penalties that both teams were able to take, while Egypt, the host team, was able to score all five. Menshwa Ahmed, Egypt’s backup goalie, stopped Ghana’s second penalty attempt, which was attempted by Dacosta Antwi.
The Black Satellites, led by head coach Desmond Offei, only recorded one loss in the U20 AFCON tournament, which was today’s game against the host country, Egypt. They won two and drew once in the group stages of the tournament.
