BECE has not been Cancelled-WAEC clarifies
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has announced that the Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) has not been cancelled, contrary to reports circulating on social media.
In an interview on UTV’s ‘Mpu Ne Mpu’ on Friday, June 21, 2024, Mr. John K. Kapi, Head of Public Relations for WAEC, emphasized that despite financial constraints faced by the examination body, the council has not cancelled the BECE. According to Kapi, WAEC is committed to conducting the exams as scheduled in July.
“We are ever ready to conduct the BECE. We are facing gross financial constraints, however, we never mentioned that we have cancelled BECE as has been falsely circulated on social media.
That is not true. What we said was that, we have put several measures in place to have the exams conducted but if the money doesn’t come, maybe we shall postpone it. So we haven’t cancelled BECE,” Kapi stated.
However, Kapi did indicate that if the government fails to release funds needed to administer the exams, there is a possibility of postponement.
The council has put in place several measures to ensure the exams are conducted smoothly, but requires financial support to facilitate the logistics involved.
“We need money to fuel the cars that will transport the examination papers to the various examination centers.

We need money to pay the personnel who will supervise the examinations as well as the invigilators who will ensure that there are no examination malpractices,” Kapi emphasized.
The council’s financial constraints are attributed to the introduction of free basic education in Ghana, which saw the government take over the responsibility of absorbing examination fees, including those of BECE. Kapi noted that prior to this development, WAEC was self-sufficient and did not face financial challenges.
“If we don’t get the money, it will be a huge challenge for us to conduct the exams as planned. It’s not just about us; it’s about ensuring that our students have a smooth and successful examination process,” Kapi added.
Students and parents can breathe a sigh of relief as WAEC has categorically stated that BECE will indeed take place as scheduled.
It remains to be seen whether the government will respond to WAEC’s call for financial support to ensure a successful conduct of the exams.
“We are not asking for anything extraordinary; we are just asking for what is necessary to ensure that our students have a smooth and successful examination process,” Kapi concluded.
