WAEC Uncovers Examination Malpractices in Bekwai, Ashanti Region
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has made a shocking discovery at an examination centre in Bekwai, Ashanti Region, Ghana. Four teachers have been caught red-handed engaging in examination malpractices, just as the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is ongoing.
The examination, which began on Monday, July 8, has been generally peaceful and smooth across the country, with various stakeholders, including President Akufo-Addo, cautioning students against cheating. However, the WAEC Head of National Office, Wendy Addy-Lamptey, revealed that a few incidents of examination malpractices have been reported.
According to Addy-Lamptey, the examination council has detected a few cases of teachers attempting to assist candidates at an examination centre in Obuasi-Bekwai.

“We’ve had good conduct this morning and again this afternoon,” she said. “We’ve had a few reports. We have had a few people picked up, some teachers picked up in Obuasi, Bekwai, trying to help the candidate.”
The details of the incident are still being investigated and will be made public soon. This development comes as a stark reminder to students and stakeholders about the gravity of the consequences of engaging in examination malpractices.
The BECE is a critical examination for students in Ghana’s basic education system, and any form of cheating can undermine the integrity of the examination process. WAEC has been working tirelessly to ensure that the examination is conducted fairly and without any form of malpractice.
This incident serves as a wake-up call to all stakeholders involved in the education sector to take a more proactive approach in preventing examination malpractices. Students and parents must also play their part by encouraging their wards to stay committed to fair play and avoid any form of cheating.
In conclusion, WAEC’s immediate action in detecting and investigating these malpractices is commendable. It is hoped that this incident will serve as a deterrent to others who may be contemplating similar actions.
